Tree Pruning & Trimming | Plant Health Care | ISA Certified Arborist
We take a scientific approach and make pruning cuts based on ANSI A-300 pruning standards for arboriculture.
We provide traditional tree removal services using pulleys or, for larger jobs, crane removal services are available.

We are a family-owned and operated, small tree preservation company located in beautiful Boise, Idaho. My name is Kevin Van Brunt, ISA Certified Arborist and Certified Tree Worker, fully insured owner and operator of ETW.
Eden’s desire is to gain the trust and loyalty of our clients by providing the Boise area with honest, proper, and professional tree care, for a fair price; fortifying the “city of trees” with proper arboriculture. Our goal is to provide clients with healthy trees and leave your property with an asset, not take one away.
I have been privileged, having spent many years working and studying domestically and internationally, in Idaho, Hawaii, and New Zealand, examining how trees react to “tree surgery” in various climates.
Although we do provide traditional tree services such as tree removal, tree trimming, and more, all of our tree care and plant health care services are completed based off of scientific research that has been proven by some of the worlds top arborists. For professional, best-in-class tree care services, provided by certified arborists who keep up with industry standards, look no further than Eden Tree Works!
When it comes to tree trimming and tree pruning, we take a scientific approach and make pruning cuts based on the most current studies and industry standards such as ANSI A300 pruning standards for arboriculture. Our first focus while pruning is to encourage the tree to become strong and healthy. Aesthetics come naturally over time, but we can also take care of pruning for clearance to walkways or yards for mowing, for a view (if possible to do it without sacrificing the health of the tree), or for clearance to a structure or building. Our pruning specifications differ from many other tree services because we actually give a pruning “prescription” as well as an objective, as each tree has its own specific need.
There are a couple basic, but major, things that you have to keep in mind. First, every cut you make on a tree is a wound and can alter its health and stability for the lifespan of the tree. Next is to make sure the tree is being pruned in a way that is making the tree stronger and not just “looking good” for a short period, only to be growing weaker and needing “tamed” again within the next two years.
In their natural environment, trees are growing very close together without much room to “spread out”, but instead grow straight up. When you plant a tree in an open area, such as a field or a yard they now have all the freedom in the world to grow in whichever direction they choose. This is where pruning needs to happen. These “radical” growth habits cause limbs to grow long and heavy, becoming susceptible to breakages and we need to prune to mitigate that potential. With this newly gained “freedom” also comes the growth of multiple growing leaders (trunks) that compete with one another and reducing this competition is also a reason to prune because the competition is a stressor to the tree.

We understand that sometimes a tree may outgrow its space or has become significantly damaged from insect infestation or a storm. Perhaps it is in your way for an additional construction project on your property. If a tree needs to come out and there is no way/reason/desire to save it, we can take care of tree removals no matter the size. ETW has the experience of getting trees out from the tightest of areas. Whether it be with the assistance of a crane (not as invasive as you may think) or just good, solid climbing and rigging skills, we can take care of your tree removal safely and efficiently with zero impact to your remaining landscape.
Sometimes when trees are planted there are things going on in the soil/rootball that are often missed. Also, a tree that is planted too deep (even 2’’ can be a big deal to a tree) can develop issues in the future. Eden Tree Works is one of the few Boise tree care companies that does root crown excavations to mitigate improper root growth and to expose the tree root flare from deep planting.
Girdling roots are a large issue in the arboriculture world and if left unattended have a high probability of slowly killing your tree. Girdling roots usually happen from a very young age when the tree is in the nursery. If a tree is grown in a pot at any point and the roots outgrow the pot they have nowhere else to go except to start growing in a circle along the inside of the pot. When these trees are eventually planted in the ground, either in the nursery or at your property, roots need to be checked to make sure this is not occurring. If the main buttress roots or significant sized roots are growing in a circle and have already “hardened off” the tree should be discarded and the nursery should give a free replacement. Small and soft malleable roots are okay to bend and place in a direction growing out and away from the tree trunk. Not properly fixing these issues at planting will eventually lead to the girdling roots making contact with the trunk as the tree grows and literally strangling the tree to death.
Planting too deep is another major issue when it comes to the root zone of trees. At planting, the root flare (where the trunk and buttress roots meet) needs to be either level with the grade or slightly higher than grade. Remember that you usually need to dig down in the soil a bit to find the root flare and don’t assume that the tree is at the proper level when you receive the tree. Overtime in a nursery soil will get built up on top of the original planting and bury the flare. The flare exposure is important because there is a gas exchange at that point and keeping those main buttress roots as your primary root structure allows for a happy and healthy root zone. If it is buried, adventitious roots will form (secondary roots above the buttress roots) and these tend to be very weak roots that tend to grow in circles and can eventually turn into girdling roots.
When these issues are not addressed at the time of planting there are ways to fix them (most of the time depending on how bad the issue has become). We have a tool called an airspade that blows supersonic air to remove soil/dirt and expose the root system of the tree without harming the roots. This allows us access to the issues and we can then perform root pruning to correct them as best as possible. Note that without proper training with root pruning it is easy to take too much and cause even further harm to the tree so this process is best left to the professionals.
If you have a stump that you would like to have removed through stump grinding, we can take care of it for you. Before grinding we will have a utility locating service come out to mark where underground utilities are located (does not include your irrigation so please read the stump grinding disclaimer in regards to that if requesting this service) so we are sure to be cleared depending on depth of stump removal.
In general, we grind down about 8”, but if you are going to replant in the same spot we can go down approximately 14’’ depending on where the stump is located. Keep in mind that most trees don’t have a tap root so you don’t have to grind as deep as you might think.
So, why grind? Stumps will eventually decay away into lovely soil over time. If you don’t feel like looking at the stump then you can have it ground out as if it was never there. Maybe you want to re-plant a new tree in the exact same spot. The last reason that comes to mind is that it is a stump from an invasive or resilient species such as a willow, cottonwood, Siberian elm, Russian olive, or black locust that keeps re-sprouting and is turning into a constant maintenance program of cutting off sprouts. Whatever the reason may be, look no further than Eden Tree Works for your stump grinding needs.
